Deepawali is celebrated on the New Moon in dark Half of Kartika Masa as per Indian calendar, when along with the idols; special silver coins with engraved images of Lord Ganapati and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. These sacred rituals are observed with Goddess Lakshmi being seated on the right side of Lord Ganapati.
The Goddess of Lakshmi is supposed to preside over every kind of movable and immovable assets, wealth and the overlord of all the Siddhis and Nidhis. Lord Ganapati presides over siddhis, intellect, gains and auspiciousness in its purest form and hence is considered the destroyer of all obstacles and inauspiciousness and giver of a benevolent mind. Worshipping both of these deities holds special significance on the sacred occasion of Deepawali.
On Deepawali, the special silver coins bearing images of Lord Ganapati and Goddess Lakshmi are purified with dugdha (milk), Dadhi (curd), ghee (buttermilk), madhu (honey), shakkar (a kind of sugar) which form panchamrita. Next, the coins are purified with water and sacred offerings of a piece of cloth, gandha (incense), akshat (whole grain of rice) are made along with flowers and garlands and a blade of grass to seek the divine blessings of deities.
